I'm Huma Imtiaz (pronouns: she/hers) and I'm running to serve as commissioner for (the newly redrawn) ANC5E04. I've lived in Bloomingdale since 2013 and am grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community that we get to call home. I’m originally from Pakistan and have lived in Washington, D.C., since 2011. I’m an avid runner, a slow cyclist (that First Street hill gets me each time), and a newbie swimmer.  In addition to my day job as a communications professional, I currently serve as the president of the volunteer-run executive committee of the LeDroit Park Community Garden, which serves residents of Bloomingdale, LeDroit Park and surrounding neighborhoods. I've been endorsed by Erin Palmer, DC Voters for Animals, and Greater Greater Washington!

ANC5E04 Campaign Update: Unofficial Results!

While the votes are still being counted, I am confident that my lead will hold and come January, I’m going to be the next Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner to represent our neighborhood!

First, I want to thank the voters of 5E04. I really am at a loss here to fully express how honored I am by your support, but try I shall.

When I started this campaign to be the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 5E04, I vowed to knock on every door in our Single Member District—and I am proud that we made that happen. Your concerns and feedback helped inform my priorities for the neighborhood, and will continue doing so. I’m doubly committed to bringing about much-needed and overdue changes, and finding solutions to existing problems so that our neighborhood continues to be the inclusive, thriving community that it already is. And I’ll be back knocking doors after Thanksgiving to start — with your input — working on our immediate next steps to push on priority #1: safer streets.

I’d like to take a minute to give a special shoutout to some Bloomingdale and Edgewood neighbors (this is not a complete list and apologies in advance for anyone I missed, it is the lack of sleep!): Emily Thomas, Sam Bonar, Brianna McGowan, Serita Sanders, Roger Fisk, Dana King, Nadia Stevens, Eve Wang, Melanie Newman, Camille Bryan, Ben Levine, Ty Cobb, Greg Fuller, Nick Sementelli, and Conor Shaw. Sending much love to my wonderful neighbors in the Parker, Gage and Flagler buildings, who rallied together to get signatures so I could be on the ballot, lent moral support, and voted!

A special shout-out to our neighbors in LeDroit Park: David Lasker and ANC commissioner Larry Handerhan, as well as my wonderful counterparts in the LeDroit Park Community Garden executive committee.

I’d also like to thank the amazing fellow ANC candidates — some of whom won on Tuesday! — for all their support and guidance: VJ Kapur, Nicole McEntee, Aru Sahini, Michele Keegan, Jen Anderson, Joe Bishop-Henchman, Colleen Costello — to name a few. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Zach Ammerman, who designed the wonderful artwork for my campaign, free of charge.

Erin Palmer — you are the model of the dedicated DC public servant. Thank you for your endorsement, encouragement and support.

Thank you to Zachary Parker who will be a fantastic Council member for Ward 5 —  your guidance so early into my campaign is much appreciated.

And a huge thank you to Greater Greater Washington and DC Voters for Animals for their endorsements of my candidacy, and to Alex Baca at GGW for organizing an ANC candidate learning session that helped me decide to run for office!

Thank you to everyone who donated money, time, and energy.

And last but not the least: thank you to my beloved family and my friends. I couldn’t have done this without you.

ANC5E04 Campaign Update: Election Day is Tuesday!

It feels like just yesterday that I started my campaign to be the next Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 5E04...and now Election Day is just a couple of days away!

I am truly bowled over by all the support I've received over the last few months. You've invited me into your homes, let me pet your dogs, and shared what you love about the neighborhood and your concerns. I've had the chance to share my priorities for the neighborhood with you — which have been shaped by your feedback! And so many of you have voted for me already — it is truly an honor to have you place your trust in me.

As a handy reminder, I've been endorsed as a candidate by Greater Greater Washington, DC Voters for Animals, and Erin Palmer.

For folks who haven't voted yet — make sure you have a plan to vote! Election Day is Tuesday, November 8, and polls are open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. You can also drop off your ballot at a dropbox or voting center until 8 p.m., or send it via mail (must be postmarked by November 8). The closest voting centers in the neighborhood are Dunbar High School (101 N St NW) and McKinley Tech High School (151 T St NE). Remember, you can vote at any voting center regardless of where you live. A full list of voting centers is available here

Once again — thank you.

ANC5E04 Campaign Update: Time to Vote!

This week, I had the most surreal experience of seeing my name on the ballot for the general election in D.C.

First, I would not be here without the support of all of you: family, friends, and neighbors, and of course, the two pets.

I'm so grateful to every one of you who opened your door — even when you were in the midst of making dinner or navigating children's bedtimes — and took the time to have a conversation about our neighborhood, and to every one of you who reached out to give advice and suggestions, helped me make connections with your networks, donated your time and money, and were a source of support and encouragement over these past few months.

During this campaign, I’ve knocked on doors across our neighborhood to hear directly from folks on the issues that matter the most to them. Whether it’s worrying about traffic safety or looking to have DC agencies respond to time sensitive requests like picking up bulk trash, what is clear is that we all love our neighborhood and want to make it better. I’ve been privileged to see firsthand how folks have come together to make this a true community, and I’d love nothing more than the chance to represent you and work alongside neighbors to make our community safer, greener, and more inclusive for all.

Which brings to me to..my one last ask!  I am hoping I can count on you to vote for me for the position of ANC commissioner for Single Member District 5E04.

Voting is easy! If you got a ballot in the mail already, you can drop it off starting tomorrow, October 14 until 8pm on Election Day at one of the mail-in ballot drop boxes, find a dropbox near you here. You can also drop off your ballot at the post office, vote early in-person, or on election day. More details that will help you make a plan to vote are here.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions/comments/concerns/hot takes! And thank you, again, for your support and guidance — it has meant the world to me.

More Endorsements!

Thrilled to share that I've been endorsed by two amazing organizations as a candidate for Advisory Neighborhood Commission for 5E04.

First up, Greater Greater Washington has endorsed me for the position! I've long admired GGW's work and advocacy and this endorsement means a lot to me. In their statement, GGW highlighted my focus on safe streets, an issue which is of utmost importance to me. You can read their list of endorsed ANC candidates for Ward 5 here, and also read my full responses to the GGW questionnaire here.

In addition, DC Voters for Animals also endorsed me as a candidate (hope the cat and dog are as happy about this as I am)! You can read my responses to their questionnaire here. I'm thankful to DCVFA for their vote of confidence, and for all the work they do in advocating for the rights of animals in our District.
